Fifth Annual Rat Beach Party to reunite original Rathskeller bands, players

Rathskeller venue circa mid-1980s

For greater-Boston/New England music fans who miss the days of the Rat music venue, The 5th Annual Rat Beach Party will feature 55 rock bands spanning over the last two weekends of September. Held at The C Note in Hull, Massachusetts on Nantasket Beach, the roster of bands performing will feature some of the bands that used to perform at The Rat in Boston, Massachusetts. Other lineups will include musicians who used to play in bands at The Rat. A host band for each day will be a notable local area band from the current greater-Boston music scene.

Included in the mix are a dozen high school bands. All of the money raise goes to the Hull High School Music Department with an emphasis for this funding be applied to helping special needs musical students. C-Note Club’s soundman and manager, Greg Campia, will manage the audio equipment for each night.

Organizer Michael Weddle, who used to manage some of the Rat era bands, discussed his event’s roster of bands, some of remain completely intact from that time period.

“Some bands are still intact, some get back together for this event, others form new units just for the event, and some are a mixture,” Weddle said. “For example: Hummingbird Syndicate is part Foxpass, Stompers and Human Sexual Response. Liz Borden sometimes comes on with old-timers and sometimes her latest crack unit.”

Weddle has so many bands participating, that it can be difficult for him to keep up with them all, as far as who is playing with who.

“Girl On Top I think is still intact,” he continued. “Billy Conners Project, formerly of Boize, has Ray Fernandes of The Atlantics. My band Climate Change is half Harlequin. Green Street Station is mostly intact. The Count always has an interesting ole-timers in his Love & Flame band.”

If the line up is starting to sound like a who’s who of Rat veterans, Weddle offers even more of a blast from the past.

“The Beachcombovers has Tom White from Unnatural Act, plus others like Bruce Scott from the Famous Strangers and One Band,” the event organizer said. “Guitarist/producer Drew Townsen’s Drangers have been around the block a few times. Gary Shane & The Detour are always nice to have going again. It’s all great. You never know who you’re gonna see in what band. That part of what makes it so interesting.”

The Annual Rat Beach Party began five years ago in Weddle’s backyard, moved to different area venues, then eventually settled at the C-Note.

The show starts on Friday, September 22nd at 6:00 p.m., continues on September 23rd, September 24th, September 29th, September 30th, and finishes up October 30th.
