February offers Black History Month, Valentines Day, and hot New England music to fight off bitter cold weather

Professor Harp; blues man, survivor of Boston’s racial discord

Happy February gentle readers, This is the month of Black History, bitter cold, and, of course, Valentine’s Day. All three of those things tie into music. A dinner dance is a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, especially if there is live band featured. Bitter cold nights could be spent inside a warm venue with a New England craft beer to warm you further. Black History Month, though, is the most obvious. Much of the music we listen to today can find its history in blues, jazz, R&B, and soul music which was, initially, the product of clever minds of the African-Americans who were telling the story of their unique American experience through their music. Below, are some offerings for everyone with a taste for the finer things in life, like live music.

Well, that’s it for now, folks. I’m going to sit back, relax, and finish reading James Baldwin’s novel If Beale Street Could Talk. Other suggestions would be the novels Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, Native Son by Richard Wright, The Color Purple by Alice Walker; Beloved by Toni Morrison, and The Autobiography Of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley, or, the movies 12 Years A Slave, In The Heat Of The Night, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, and Hidden Figures. Enjoy Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, and please try to stay warm. Spring will be here sooner than you think. Hey, where’s Punxsutawney Phil?
